Petal It Forward

petal it forward. toby kassoy

Lilla Bello founder Toby Kassoy, has introduced a community project that is very near and dear to her heart. As we all know, the power of receiving flowers can be absolutely immeasurable. The sentiment, the love from one person to another, the care that went into them and the presence is it gives in any room – All of that happens in the very fleeting 5-7 day lifespan of those blooms themselves. Petal It Forward , is a non-profit community project dedicated to re-purposing flowers leftover from a wedding or event, and donating them to local convalescent homes, bringing a little brightness and joy into the lives of unsuspecting recipients, letting them know they are loved and thought of…

Please join in spreading the word, share, follow their page, get involved! They would be thrilled to see the floral design community join in this mission!  xo

Blooming Now in Jerusalem

Giant flowers bloom and react to pedestrians and transportation in Jerusalem. Each 30-foot-tall flower provides interactive shade, movement and beautification in the plaza. When a tram arrives, the flowers open to provide cover for the pedestrians as they step off the train.

Maria Maxit. Fragrant Fall

“…One of my personal secrets is to add herbs to an arrangement for not only the play of colors and textures, but also the intoxicating aomas, which will make other fall in love with the design.” ~ Maria Maxit

16th Century Revisited

Monday, November 2nd, 2015

Among the many artful arrangements winding their way through Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr accounts, a very specific aesthetic is asserting itself: a low, wide, asymmetrical grouping that is nothing like the tidy Martha Stewart bouquets that dominated in the 1990s. Now, airy and elaborate mixed compositions erupt from low-footed urns and nearly spent-looking blooms reach in all directions alongside stray tendrils and vines. This distinct style, which appears over and over, calls to mind Dutch and Flemish botanical paintings of the 16th century…

ThenIn the 16th century, flower bulbs were so rare and expensive that it was more economical to commission a painting of an arrangement than to own fresh blooms…In its heyday, the Dutch style deliberately combined disharmonious colours and, unlike later tall and stiff Victorian styles, had no symmetry or central point. “Wild flowers and grasses from the field were also included,” Blacker notes. “Some flowers were purposely placed facing backwards and sideways…they were not crowded in the vase – the aim was to make each bloom clearly visible.”

Creepy Crawly Flighty Little Pollinators

Monday, October 26th, 2015

pollinators.1

Pollinators are responsible for assisting over 80% of the world’s flowering plants. Without them, humans and wildlife wouldn’t have much to eat or look at! Animals that assist plants in their reproduction as pollinators include species of ants, bats, bees, beetles, birds, butterflies, flies, moths, wasps, as well as other unusual animals.  Wind and water also play a role in the pollination of many plants.

The Grand Flourish

Friday, October 23rd, 2015

A man-made mountain blanketed in royal blue and purple flowers and set within former palace grounds, now the world’s largest museum, conjures up the type of grand flourish once commissioned by kings.

Its construction within the Cour Carrée, the exquisite quadrilateral courtyard at the Louvre’s east end, began as it always does ahead of Paris Fashion Week: first the fencing, then the frame demarcating the perimeter of the tent, followed by the support beams and white shell. But at some point last week, there were signs that this structure would be different; namely, an undulating wood grid protruding from one of its sides. Over the next few days, a team totaling 100 continued adding to the structure so that by Wednesday, museumgoers peering out from the royal apartments began marveling at – and photographing – half-planted hill.
